An event by Klarna Engineering.

Thursday, April 21, at 17:00-20:00 CET.

Klarna Engineering Live Series: Gothenburg is for Software Engineers & Engineering Managers who want to hear about the engineering challenges and solutions that resulted in Klarna becoming the largest private FinTech company in the EU valued at $46 Billion.

In 2015 Klarna Engineering started its own internal conference for Product & Engineering. Every year it has grown. You can see some of the talks here. Klarna Engineering Live Series is a spin off of this internal conference, where we bring a couple of talks to your hometown.

The event also offers an opportunity to network and interact with other like minded engineers in your home city as well as get to know what it's like to work at Klarna.

Please join us, share some snacks and drinks and meet with some of the Klarna Engineering teams and engineers responsible for achieving this level of growth.

JavaScript Virtual Machines 101

Klarna has invested heavily in React Native and JavaScript, and while JavaScript is a great language to write, especially with all the modern features or even through TypeScript, it wasn’t always very fast to execute. Modern JavaScript Virtual Machines (VMs) have become increasingly complex to make the ever growing JavaScript programs startup faster, execute faster, use less memory, consume less power, and so on. Here we’ll have a look at how modern VMs use a mix of strategies ranging from the 90s to modern innovations to achieve all that. While the talk will be mostly from the perspective of JavaScriptCore, Apple’s VM used in WebKit (and consequently Safari), most of it is applicable to the other popular JavaScript VMs.

Tadeu Zagallo

Tadeu Zagallo is a Principal engineer in Klarna’s App Core team. Tadeu has a big interest in programming languages, type theory, and compilers. He has been in software engineering for 12 years and worked in the JavaScript VM for nearly 4 years.

End of Webpack Hegemony

For years Webpack has been the undisputed king of the hill, having solutions and plugins for virtually every use case – but with complex setup and slow performance. Recently this has been challenged by more specialized approaches leading to better developer experience, much faster compilation, and even skipping bundling all-together. Prepare yourself for JavaScript fatigue – join us for a brief history of bundlers and what the future looks like.

Joel is an architect at Klarna in the App domain.

Motivation Equation and other Tricks to Quantify your Procrastination

Doing work sounds simple but our productivity often stumbles for seemingly weird reasons. When I was in the university I was trying to figure out why some tasks are hard but fun and I do them while others are simple but I avoid them at all costs. All the productivity self-help books I've read won't help me with figuring that out.

Later when I was struggling to finish my thesis I started figuring out if there's a more scientific approach to figuring out motivation and the ways to improve. And, apparently, there is, and in this talk, I will cover modern "scientifically-based" ways to approach it which are the basis in most commonly used so-called "productivity lifehacks". The talk aim is not to give you a way to start doing things you don't enjoy doing, but rather an introduction to a framework that can be used to understand better why you might not be moving that JIRA ticket and what can you do to help with that.

Igor Mosyagin

Igor Mosyagin is an Engineer at Klarna's Data Insight and Analytics Platforms team. Igor followed an irregular path in his career by starting as python backend developer back in 2011 but then following an academic detour to satisfy his curiosity in Computational Quantum Mechanics. After defending his PhDs, Igor switched back to the Industry in 2017. He's been focusing on developing Data-* related things including in-house machine learning tools and data engineering platforms. Igor joined Klarna in 2020 and is a huge fan of quantum mechanics, cephalopods, and math rock.
